Bass, Matthew Anchel, was born and raised in New York City and is currently an undergraduate at Manhattan School of Music studying with Patricia McCaffrey. This past summer he made his professional debut with The Opera Theatre of St. Louis as a Gerdine Young Arist in William Walton’s Troilus and Cressida, playing the role of Horaste. Last year, he played the Second Lion (Patience) in Lukas Foss' Griffelkin with Manhattan School of Music, in which Opera News declared he "stole the show." He has also performed roles from Les Contes D’Hoffmann (Dr. Miracle), I Puritani (Giorgio) Don Giovanni (Don Giovanni and Leporello), Cosi Fan Tutte (Don Alfonso), Lucia Di Lammermoor (Raimondi), and Un Ballo in Maschera (Samuel) at various venues in New York City. Recently, he sang Somnus in Ken Merrill’s production of Semele and did his first Messiah as the Bass soloist with the Champlain Oratorio Society in Plattsburgh, New York. This coming year he will be playing Mr. Peachum in Dona Vaughn’s Production of The Beggar’s Opera, and will be returning to Opera Theatre of St. Louis to sing The First Solder in Salome this coming spring.
