Canadian soprano Emily Duncan-Brown began performing professionally at the age
of eleven, when she was cast as the lead singer and character of Cirque du
Soleil’s touring production of Quidam. After spending two years and performing over 400 shows with the tour, she pursued her true passion, opera. She completed her bachelor’s degree at McGill University in Montreal, performing the roles of Dido and Nella with Opera McGill and singing professionally with the Church of St. Andrews and St. Paul and the Theatre of Early Music. Other professional Canadian credits include the role of Clarissa in Mahler/Weber's opera Die Drei Pintos with Opera in Concert, and the title role in The Merry Widow with Toronto Operetta Theatre. Emily then moved to New York and graduated with her Masters of Music from Mannes College, where she studied voice with world-renown teacher, Ruth Falcon. Since her arrival in New York, she has performed at Carnegie Hall as a featured soloist twice, and has sung the lead roles in Mannes Opera's productions of both 2008 and 2009. Her portrayal of Blanche in Dialogues of the Carmelites was warmly praised by the New York Times, stating "she sang with radiant tone and superb diction" and recently reviewed for her portrayal of Violetta in La Traviata, her voice was described as a "sizeable instrument with a warm, rich middle, a shimmering, flexible top, excellent control and no trouble at all filling the small house. Her mature, musically insightful, often exquisitely beautiful delivery was first-rate." She went on to reprise the role of Violetta in Tel Aviv this summer, as a participant of the International Vocal Arts Institute. Emily has also been the recipient of Encouragement Grants from the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions, the George London Foundation and the Guilio Gari Foundation. In May Emily will be singing the role of Despina with Mannes Opera and this summer she will be attending Tanglewood Music Center as a Vocal Fellow, singing the role of Echo in Strauss's opera Ariadne auf Naxos under the baton of Maestro James Levine. She is presently pursuing a Professional Studies Diploma from Mannes College.
