This season Corey Bix returns to San Francisco Opera as Augustin Moser in Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg following a last-minute role debut there last season as Énée in Les Troyens. He also joins Virginia Opera to appear as Erik in Der fliegende Holländer and Austin Opera to reprise his acclaimed portrayal of Lennie in Of Mice and Men. Engagements for the tenor in the 2014-15 season included his Lyric Opera of Chicago debut as Heinrich in Tannhäuser and Lennie with Tulsa Opera. On the concert stage, Corey returned to the American Symphony Orchestra for Szymanowski’s “Symphony No. 3” at Carnegie Hall, joined the Back Bay Chorale in Boston as Walther in excepts of Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg, and appeared as the Fourth Jew in Salome with the Philadelphia Orchestra. In 2013-2014, Corey was Sir Edgar Aubry in Marschner’s Der Vampyr with New Orleans Opera and Erik in Der fliegende Holländer with Arizona Opera in Phoenix and Tucson; he also sang his first Alfred in Die Fledermaus with Anchorage Opera and joined the roster of Lyric Opera of Chicago for its production of Rusalka before returning to Glimmerglass as The Tenor/Bacchus in Ariadne auf Naxos.

 

Originally from Clarinda, Iowa, Corey earned a Bachelor of Music from Simpson College in Indianola, IA, and a Master of Music degree from the New England Conservatory in May 2004. From 2001-2004, he spent summers in Young Artist programs at the Des Moines Metro Opera and at Glimmerglass Opera, and later apprenticed at Santa Fe Opera, Florida Grand Opera, and Glimmerglass. Corey’s international career began in 2009 when he made his European debut as the Prince in Rusalka with the Greek National Opera, returning to the company later in the season for the title role in  Stravinsky’s Oedipus Rex. Matteo in Richard Strauss’ Arabellaat Switzerland’s Theater St. Gallen soon followed, as did the Fourth Jew in Salome for his San Francisco Opera debut, the First Senator in Franz Schreker’s Die Gezeichneten (The Stigmatized) inhis Los Angeles Opera debut, the Kaiser in Die Frau ohne Schatten with Oper Graz, and Bacchus with Washington National Opera.

 

Since then, the versatile tenor has brought his Bacchus to the Vienna Volksoper, Fort Worth Opera, and Badisches Staatstheater Karlsruhe as well as Glimmerglass. Other appearances have included the title role in Flotow’s Alessandro Stradella (Stadttheater Giesen); Erik (Hungarian National Opera, Savonlinna, Los Angeles Opera); Bob Boles in Peter Grimes and Aegisth in Elektra (Des Moines Metro Opera), Walther (Theater Kiel); Florestan in Fidelio (Utah Opera); Lennie (Utah Opera, Sarasota Opera), and Sam in Susannah with New York Opera Project.

 

Corey Bix was the 2008 winner of the Robert Lauch Memorial Grant from the Wagner Society of New York and the 2007 winner of the George London/Kirsten Flagstad Award for a singer with potential for a Wagnerian career, as well as the foundation’s prestigious Vienna Prize.
