After beginning the new season as Rosina in Il barbieri de Sevilla with Opera Omaha, Sandra Piques Eddy will revisit Boston Lyric Opera next March as Charlotte in Werther and appear as Stéphano in Roméo et Juliette at Atlanta Opera. She will also return to the Metropolitan Opera to cover Maddalena in Rigoletto. In the 2014-15 season the mezzo rejoined Boston Lyric as Varvara in Janácek’s Katya Kabanová, returned to Opera North (UK) in the title role in The Coronation of Poppea, appeared as Carmen with Portland Opera and also with Calgary Opera in her company debut; made a debut with New York Philharmonic Ensembles as soloist in Respighi’s “Il tramonto”; and in summer sang the title role (Angelina) in La Cenerentola, first with Opera Saratoga and then with Greensboro Opera (NC).

 

A Boston native, Sandy was a Music Education major at The Boston Conservatory and taught chorus in Needham's public schools. In 1999 she graduated from Boston University’s School for the Arts with a master’s degree in Vocal Performance. Then as an apprentice artist at the Boston University Opera Institute, Sandy appearied in many leading roles including her signature Cherubino in Le nozze di Figaro and Sesto in La clemenza di Tito, for which in 2000 The Boston Herald cited her as “Best Young Musician” of the year. In 2001 the mezzo made her Met debut as the Servant in Die Frau ohne Schatten. Her Metropolitan Opera credits include Fiona in the American premiere of Nico Muhly’s Two Boys, Cherubino, Mercédès in Carmen, Lola in Cavalleria Rusticana, Zulma in L'italiana in Algeri,and Rosette in Manon, along with many other roles.

 

Among her many leading roles, Sandy is especially acclaimed for her Carmen, which she has performed for the Opera North (UK), Opera Colorado, Lyric Opera of Kansas City, Chicago Opera Theater (Peter Brook version), and Opera Coeur d’Alene, as well as Portland Opera (OR) and Calgary Opera. Her Rossini heroines include Rosina (Nashville Opera, Lyric Opera of Kansas City, Austin Lyric Opera, Vancouver Opera); Isabella in L’Italiana in Algeri (Atlanta, Austin Opera, Arizona Opera, Vancouver Opera, Boston Midsummer Opera); and Angelina in La Cenerentola (Austin Lyric Opera, the Spoleto Festival USA). In addition to Cherubino (Los Angeles Opera, Canadian Opera Company, Chicago Opera Theater) and Sesto, Sandy’s Mozart roles have included Zerlina in Don Giovanni with Opera Omaha and Portland Opera; Idamante in Idomeneo with Boston Lyric Opera and Florentine Opera; and Dorabella in Cosìfan tutte at Boston Lyric, Glimmerglass Opera, Pittsburgh Opera, New York City Opera, and last year at the Hyogo Performing Arts Center in Japan. The versatile mezzo has also appeared as Meg in Little Women with Glimmerglass Opera, Fort Worth Opera, and Kentucky Opera.

 

Sandra Piques Eddy won competitions at both the Boston Conservatory and Opera Lirica and was a 2002 recipient of a Richard T. Gold Shoshana Foundation Career Grant through the Glimmerglass Opera Young American Artist Program.
