Katrina Galka

New England Second Place Winner 2014

Katrina Galka remains at Portland (OR) Opera, where her roles in the 2015-2016 season include Elvira in L’Italiana in Algeri, Johanna in Sweeney Todd, Papagena in Die Zauberflöte. Last season the soprano appeared as Frasquita in Carmen and the Adult Kim in Showboat, sang Ida and covered Adele in Die Fledermaus, and covered Anne Truelove in The Rake’s Progress. She will also performed in concert for Portland Opera’s Resident Artist Recital Series and returned to New England as the Angel in Respighi's “Laud to the Nativity” with the Rhode Island Civic Chorale.

 

Originally from Milwaukee, Katrina received a Bachelor of Music degree from Southern Methodist University and a Master of Music degree from the Boston University Opera Institute, where her most recent roles were Rosalba in Daniel Catán’s Florencia en el amazonas and Diana in Jonathan Dove's Siren Song. In 2013 Katrina made her professional debut as a Gerdine Young Artist with Opera Theatre of Saint Louis as Isabel in The Pirates of Penzance; the next summer she returned as a “Festival Artist” to sing Papagena in The Magic Flute and cover Sister Constance in The Dialogues of the Carmelites.

 

Katrina’s operatic resume includes Mrs. Julian in Britten’s Owen Wingrave, Servilia in La clemenza di Tito, Aurore in Massenet’s Le portrait de Manon, and Carolina in Cimarosa’s Il matrimonio segreto, all at the Boston University Opera Institute, Marie in La fille du régiment with the CoOperative Program, Eurydice in Orpheus in the Underworld and Elisa in Il re pastore with Southern Methodist University, Pamina in Die Zauberflöte, Lauretta in Gianni Schicchi, and Barbarina in Le nozze di Figaro with the Amalfi Coast Music & Arts Festival, and Serpina in La serva padrona with Metroplex Opera Company (Dallas).

 

The soprano’s competition experience includes an Encouragement Award in the 2014 Marcello Giordani International Voice Competition, and First Place in the graduate division of the North End Music and Performing Arts Center Competition in Boston. Katerina also won second place in the 2012 Heida Hermanns International Voice Competition, was a finalist in the 2012 MetroWest Voice Competition, won second place in the 2011 Dallas Opera Guild Competition, was a finalist in the National Opera Association’s Vocal Competition’s Scholarship Division, took first place in the 2011 Southern Methodist University’s Undergraduate Concerto Competition, and won second place and the audience voice award in the 2010 Milwaukee Civic Music Association’s Collegiate Music Competition. She is also a 2007 YoungArts Level I award winner in musical theatre and a two-time award winner in the Texoma region of NATS. Katrina was awarded the opportunity to sing as a soloist at the John F. Kennedy Center as a winner of the 2007 U.S. Presidential Scholar in the Arts honor.
