Leah Hawkins
Mezzo soprano
New England Second Place Winner 2015

The recipient of an Encouragement Award in the 2015 George London Vocal Competition, Leah Hawkins joins Washington National Opera’s Domingo-Cafritz Young Artist Program this season. The mezzo will make her company debut as Mrs. Dorsey/Amelia Boynton in the world premiere of the revised version of Philip Glass’ Appomattox. In April she will sing Maria in Porgy and Bess with the Baltimore Symphony. Last summer Leah was a Studio Artist with Chautauqua Opera, covering the role of Madame Larina in Eugene Onegin.

 

A native of Philadelphia, Leah received her Bachelors of Arts in Music from Morgan State University in Baltimore in 2013 and her Master of Music degree from the Yale School of Music in 2015. Her roles at Yale included Marcellina in Le nozze di Figaro, La Badessa in Suor Angelica, Zita in Gianni Schicchi, Giulietta in Les contes d'Hoffmann, Tisbe in La Cenerentola, Maria in Porgy and Bess, and Julia Child in Lee Hoiby’s one-woman opera Bon Appétit. The mezzo has been a young artist with The Martina Arroyo Foundation’s Prelude to Performance Program, Houston Grand Opera’s Young Artist Vocal Academy in 2013, and Central City Opera in 2014. On the concert stage, she has appeared with the Mid-Atlantic Symphony, Black Pearl Orchestra, Chesapeake Youth Symphony, Yale Philharmonia, and the New Haven Symphony.

 

In addition to her 2015 George London Encouragement Award, Leah Hawkins received the Hope Clark award at the 2014 Opera Ebony Competition, and an Encouragement Award at the 2014 Marcello Giordani International Vocal Competition. Earlier Leah was awarded First Place at the 2013 National Association of Negro Business and Professional Women's Clubs, Inc. Vocal Arts Competition for Emerging Artists, and was a 2010 and 2011 first-place winner in the Maryland/Washington, DC area competition of the National Association of Teachers of Singing.
