Alison King
New England Third Place Winner 2015

In December of 2014, Alison King joined her long-time teacher and mentor Marilyn Horne, with five other singers and two pianists, in “The Song Continues: the Paris residency,” a weeklong series of master classes and concerts held at Studio Bastille and the Musée Jacquemart-André, with the support of Atelier Lyrique and the Opéra national de Paris. Then in January Alison took part in a gala Carnegie Hall celebration for Marilyn Horne, the culmination of the 2015 edition of “The Song Continues,” the renowned mezzo-soprano’s annual exploration of the song repertoire, with which Alison has been associated since 2011. Alison later appeared at Carnegie Hall in master classes with Joyce Di Donato, and joined the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra for the Mozart “Requiem.” In summer Alison returned to Chautauqua Opera as an apprentice artist, covering Tatiana in Eugene Onegin.

A 2014 graduate of the Yale Opera Studio with a Master of Music degree, Alison was born in Portland, Oregon and at sixteen made her stage debut with the Oregon Symphony in their Young Artist Concert Series, and with the Coeur D’Alene (ID) Symphony. Her roles at Yale included Giulietta in I Capuleti e I Montecchi, Brigitta in Iolanta, Musetta in La bohème, and Clorinda in La Cenerentola. In 2011 Alison attended Marilyn Horne’s Music Academy of the West as a cover for Rosina in Il barbiere di Siviglia, returning in later summers as Anne Trulove in The Rake’s Progress and Micaela in Carmen. In 2013 she made her Chautauqua Opera debut as the Second Niece in Peter Grimes.

In 2015 Alison won third prize in the Gerda Lissner Competition and was also selected to perform at the Gerda Lissner Foundation Winners Gala at the New York Athletic Club. She also received a grant in the 2015 Licia Albanese-Puccini Foundation International Vocal Competition.   In 2014 the soprano was a semi-finalist in the McCammon Voice Competition in Fort Worth and won first prize in the Opera Birmingham Competition, appearing in recital there that fall.
